Meet Remi: An Example of Empowering Lives and Families

Every Child and family that comes into the CARE program have one thing in common, irrespective of how different their backgrounds might be. It is the lack of stability in their lives and their environments. CARE Africa started as a family preservation ministry that sought to provide stability and allow the children a proper environment to flourish. However, we soon realized that a holistic approach to care for the children and their futures needed to extend beyond their educational, health, or spiritual needs. We also needed to impact the environment that the children returned to after school or CARE programs and activities.

This led to the initiation of our Caretakers department, which includes our collaboration with the parent(s), grandparents, or closest relatives of the children enrolled in our program. Our children have better chances of a stable and flourishing environment to grow if they can return home to caretakers that are equipped behaviorally and financially to parent. 

Meet Remi, one of the caretakers with CARE Africa. Her journey with us started in 2016 when she worked as a cleaner at a guesthouse in the Egbe community. Remi could only assist others with laundry and cleaning to get paid, as she did not have a secondary school degree to be considered for a full-time job. This lack of employment stability affected her self-confidence and judgment, particularly with potential life partners. The resulting chaos from these decisions and unstable employment started to affect her ability to care for her children.

Remi was encouraged to attend more counseling sessions with our caretaker manager; however, we wanted to do more to aid her healing progress, so we decided to brainstorm with her and decide on a means to have her own small business and provide for her family. Much of the food that the locals in the Egbe community consume; are grains, seeds, roots, and vegetables, which often require a grinding machine (large food processor) to process the food into powder or paste. Remi decided on a grinding machine. We proceeded to upload the project on DonorSee, and it got funded!

Remi has now started her food processing business and can work to effectively support her family.

Our Caretaker Manager has seen substantial improvement in Remi’s engagement and behavior, and this impact has trickled down to her son, as we have witnessed a significant change in his countenance as well. Some of our caretakers have similar stories to Remi, and we are thankful for the opportunity to provide a comprehensive approach to caring for the children, their families, and the Egbe community.Β

We are thrilled to take a moment to introduce you to a remarkable individual who has been the driving force behind our School Building Project. Yomi Bello

Over the past year, he has taken the reins of our project with incredible enthusiasm and professionalism. From the initial planning stages to the final touches, he has been instrumental in ensuring the successful execution of every aspect of the project. His leadership, vision, and tireless efforts will pave the way for a brighter future for our children.

What truly sets Yomi apart is his expertise and the personal sacrifices he has made along the way. Leaving behind his wife and two children in Lagos, he dedicated himself to being on-site, overseeing every detail to ensure the construction progressed smoothly. This level of commitment goes beyond professional responsibility; it reflects a deep passion for providing better opportunities for the children in Egbe.

Yomi has been more than a project manager; he has become a vital part of our community. His approachability, willingness to listen, and ability to collaborate with the community and the Elegbe and his counsel have fostered an environment of trust and teamwork. He has not only managed blocks and concrete but has also built bridges between C.A.R.E. Africa and the community..

We are excited to give you an update on the school building project. The physical transformation of our school is taking shape, but there’s a vital element that needs your support to ensure its success – the electrical powerhouse.

Praise the Lord with Us!

I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.Β Β Psalm 9:1

1.Β MEDICAL CARE: Praise God for our access to quality medical care.Β  CARE Africa partners with ECWA Hospital Egbe to offer medical care to our students.Β  RecentlyΒ our students had the opportunity to receive dental and eye exams.Β  There are many children in Sub-Saharan Africa who would never receiveΒ this type of care.Β  Thanks to ECWA Hospital Egbe and our faithful supporters for giving our children the gift of health.Β  Praise God!Β 

2.Β CAREER DAY is always a very exciting day at CARE Africa, and this year was no exception.Β  We praise God for our guest speakers who took the timeΒ to inspire our students to reach for the stars.Β  A solid education can open doors for disadvantaged youth in Nigeria, and we are so excited to be able to dream with and encourage our students.

3.Β SPELLING BEE:Β Foundations Academy recently had a spelling bee.Β  Praise God that aΒ lot of fun was had as the students did their best to show all they had learned over the past year.

1.Β HEALTHY STUDENTSΒ Pray for health and strength for our studentsΒ  Pray especially for one student who has been diagnosed with an umbilical hernia that may require surgery.Β  Pray for wisdom for the doctors that are treating the student and for strength for the student on the road ahead.Β 

Β 2. GRADUATIONΒ Please remember all of our graduates in your prayers.Β  Pray that they will seek the Lord’s will as they go forward.Β  Pray for those headed to university in the next school year and for those who are still waiting for admission.Β Β 

3.Β TEACHERS Continue to remember our teachers.Β  Please pray for strength, patience, and for wisdom for them.Β  Pray also that they will find much joy in their tasks.

Leaving an Impact

There are many ways we can impact lives across the globe and truly make a difference. DonorSee is one of those platforms and what a blessing it has been to the ministry. A couple of months ago, I did a blog on how DonorSee emerged as a platform and eventually upscaled to impact hundreds of lives in 38 different countries, see Why DonorSee?

It has been two years since C.A.R.E. Africa came on board the platform, and now we have a community that is familiar with the ministry and has given us the opportunity to impact the lives of our children, staff, and the community at large!

You truly get to see lives transformed and improved on DonorSee. We have been able to empower some of our caretakers through the community from DonorSee, maintain our ministry vehicles, send our children to computer camp, and even assist with several community needs. I have included pictures of some of those funded projects below.

Ever since C.A.R.E. joined the platform, we have been able to raise $81,093, of which many of you reading this have contributed to that number. We are thankful that we can utilize a platform such as DonorSee to positively impact so many lives.

Do You Pray For Us?

We hope that you do! Prayer transforms us as we seek our father’s face and plead for his will. At C.A.R.E., we recognize that the ministry entirely relies on the prayers and support of believers across the globe. We are a family preservation ministry, which means that at our core we are constantly working to undo the enemy’s influence in the lives of our children and the community at large.
This is why the newest addition to the CA.R.E. team is so crucial to the entire ministry. Alison Douma is our prayer advocate, and she will be working closely with the Nigerian staff as well as the American team to communicate situations and needs to the prayer group in a bi-weekly prayer letter. Alison will also be sharing our prayer requests regularly with churches and others to have as many people praying for C.A.R.E. Africa as possible. We currently have 230 prayer warriors, and we would like to continue to grow that number. We are excited to have Alison join the team because we know with this addition, we are well on our way to achieving our goal. Here is the link to our most recent Prayer Letter. Who Encourages Whom?

Every other Thursday morning I hold my phone close in anticipation and wait.Β 

I get my coffee, sit at my desk, and wait.

I watch my phone screen and wait.

Then my phone rings, my heart beats a bit quicker, and I answer.

Sometimes it takes a few times answering before the connection holds, but the attempts and the wait are worth it.

On the other end of the line are the sweet voices of the teachers at CARE/Foundations Academy in Egbe!

For a few years now I have had the privilege of chatting with teachers over WhatsApp.

We share what they have been teaching the kids. I ask them about their β€˜Big Wins’ and pray over the challenges they face in their classrooms. We laugh together and share about family life. It is like sitting in a Staff Room at any school, community, and fellowship except we are doing it over the phone.

When the network is cooperating, we do FaceTime. What a treat that is, we can see each other, we wave and wave, and sometimes a few happy tears flow.

I ask how I can pray for them, and we pray for each other.

Many times, the call gets dropped, but we try connecting again (and again) so we can finish the call with sweet goodbyes.

My role is to encourage the staff at Foundations. I listen and take notes as they share their experiences in Egbe.

As I write down what they share, many memories come flooding back to my days at Foundations. Good memories.

After the call ends, I take a few minutes to review what I have written and pray again.

Each call brings joy. I can picture the school, staff, and kids running around, I can hear the laughter coming from the kids in the background.

These calls encourage me.

I am thankful for the time that we get to connect.

God is faithful to keep His promises and has been faithful to CARE and Foundations Academy!

Our teachers at Foundations Academy in Egbe Nigeria, are committed to the counter-cultural work of teaching the whole child. They implement classroom management styles that train in excellence while inspiring each child to reach for their God-given gifts. $100 can support a teacher for one month AND provide much-desired direct encouragement and discipleship. Teachers are essential to our children’s lives, and we strive to implement a holistic approach.

Meet the Makens. They visited Egbe years ago and genuinely fell in love. The Makens formed an attachment to a small, five-year-old boy they chose to sponsor.  Their commitment to this child was so sincere that he graduated and is now attending university with their full support. They also support his caregiver, which is his grandmother. Their support has allowed us to help her with monthly food packages, accommodations, and provisions. The Makens are dedicated to the education and empowerment of the children and caregivers of CARE Africa and wanted to assist us in completing the construction of our school, Foundations Academy of Egbe. The Makens have generously agreed to match any funds we raise through the end of the year up to $16,500, which is half of the $33,000 needed to finish our school.
