Shola and Mommy Day

Posted: October 19, 2013 by Patrice Miles in Egbe Nigeria, Miles In Missions, Uncategorized

shola and me“Lord God, you know who will be helping us in Egbe when we arrive. You know her name, you know her face and you know her family. We pray for her right now that you would take care of her and her family and prepare her heart for our family. ” This was my prayer back in June, two months away from our departure to Nigeria. I get teary eyed now knowing I was praying for Shola the whole time.

Shola is amazing in so many ways. Her beauty is inside and out and we are so blessed to get to be a part of her life. She comes Mon.-Fri. 8:30am-5pm, Saturdays 12-5pm and stays late many nights. When I first arrived I thought I could handle all this cooking and cleaning ko si whalla (no problem). Yeah right!! Without Shola I don’t know where we would be. She cleans, cooks, goes to market, loves on my children, brightens my day, feeds our Aja (dog), and helps me with cultural questions. She allows me the time to focus on educating my children, keeping up with our ministry and finding new ways to be a light for Gods kingdom in Egbe.sholacomputer

Shola and Mommy Day has recently started on Fridays since Courtney, the Oyinbos (missionaries) from HELP started teaching Cason and Jolie. This gives Shola and I time to talk and pray. I asked her what she wanted to learn and she said typing. So on Fridays we are learning typing and next she wants to move onto the printer/scanner.

When I moved to Egbe I never thought part of my ministry would be in my own home. I love this place, I love the Yoruba people and I love watching God work in our lives and the people around us. Please pray for the next person to join our family. We are seeking God about the need to hire a guard/driver/gardner/handyman/mechanic. We know God has the perfect man with all of these skills picked out. We are trusting him to lead us to this Godly man just like he led us to Shola.

Cap’n Crunch Time!

Cap’n Crunch Time!captn I chose that title because it is true for us in a several ways right now. For one, we are eating everything in sight to get our last fills of American foods. Cap’n Crunch, Lucky Charms, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, etc. etc. and that’s just the breakfast cereals!

In the past couple of weeks we have had many “Good-bye” events, parties, and dinners with friends and family. Packing on the pounds has never been easier with all of the great homemade food and deserts. Did I mention the deserts?

FamilyAll of the Goodbye events have been wonderful and we are so blessed to have everyone in our lives, even if they will be some 5,000 miles away from us for the next two years. We are also very glad that technology can bring us back together on a regular basis with Skype, cheap internet phone calls, this blog, and of course Facebook!

Right now, we are just eight days away from leaving and it’s definitely “crunch time” for our family. We’ve sold everything including both cars and Cason has a few items left he has on craigslist. Click Cason 1 and Cason 2  for links to his items. He wants to purchase a remote control four wheeler to take to Egbe.  Next, is the need to pack everything in luggage and boxes that have to be airline approved size and of course, they have to be under 50 lbs. each. This will be a challenge to say the least.

jolieLastly, it’s “crunch-time” for our support goals! Our support is just $200/month shy of where we need to be and we still need 104 prayer partners. If you feel led to participate with us in this ministry to the Nigerian people and the hospital that is so important to them, please prayerfully consider a monthly commitment of $10, $25, $50, or more per month to Miles In Missions. Prayer support is just as important as financial support, so if you want to be a prayer warrior, please email Patrice to let her know.

I need to tell you that I am continually amazed how people have come behind us and this ministry to support it in big ways. We want to give you all a very big THANK YOU as we would not be able to GO if people like you did not SEND.

15 Days and Counting!

Posted: July 31, 2013 by Patrice Miles in Uncategorized

IMG_346815 days from today,  if you are driving the Watterson Expressway around 9am you will see an entourage of SUV’s heading to the Louisville airport. They will be carrying 20 pieces of luggage, The Miles Family, and some very physically and emotionally exhausted family members and friends. I feel sorry for the Louisville Airport employees that will be working that morning! I am sure it will be a mess of boxes, luggage, crying people and kleenexes.

The goodbyes have started and we are trying to capture as much pictures and video that we can. If you have any, will you please email them to me by clicking EMAIL? Our send off and good bye parties have been amazing. As we eagerly await our departure it is bittersweet….you cannot say hello without saying goodbye.

With only 15 days left we are at crunch time and still need help in so many areas.

11588812_s1. We need prayer for VISA’s to get approved.

2. We need prayer for a new tenant for our rental property. Click 5306 Saratoga Estates Cir for more info.

3. We need to sell both of our cars. The Toyota Sequoia is a 2007 and has 92,000 miles on it and we are asking $17k. The Ford Explorer is a 2004 and has 105,000 miles and we are asking $3,900. We should have these online this weekend with pictures.

4. We need prayer for more financial partners. We need $350 in monthly support to get to 100%. Click DONATE to become a monthly or one time financial partner.

5. We need more prayer partners. We currently have 291 and we would love to have 400. Click PRAYER to become a prayer partner.

6. Last but not least we need prayer for our sanity over the next 15 days of packing. We will be checking the list and checking it twice.

Road Trip!

mapLouisville, KY to Tupelo, MS to Ft. Lauderdale FL to Ft. Myers, FL in 48 hours. Who can do that? My dad and I can!

My father and I’s adventure started when we left Louisville, KY on Sunday at 1pm. We drove the 26’ Uhaul truck down to Tupelo, MS arriving around 8pm. Along the way, we took a more direct route from Nashville following the Nachez Trail. It has a speed limit of only 50mph, but there was virtually no traffic of any kind and is a very scenic road (especially compared to boring interstates). In Tupelo, we stayed at the Motel 6 (swanky!). Getting up the next morning, we ate at McDonalds, where I learned that Elvis was born and raised in Tupelo. We proceeded to the Mississippi NW hospital to load used and unwanted medical furniture/supplies that had been donated for the Egbe hospital.

When we arrived, we realized quickly that the largest Uhaul truck we had rented was not big enough for everything, so we had to go rent a trailer to drag behind us the rest of the way. From 8am to 1pm we loaded the supplies, stacking them much like a game of Jenga. On the road again, we were headed towards Ft. Lauderdale, Fl where the supplies and some personal items will be loaded on a shipping container to be seen again in Nigeria. We drove straight through the night, stopping once for dinner and only for gas when needed. We arrived at our destination at 5am Tuesday morning.

banyonWe dropped the truck and trailer with employees of Banyan Air and proceeded to the home of the owner of Banyan. They graciously opened up their home for us to shower and get rejuvenated after our long intense drive. After that, we got to tour the “campus” of Banyan air and see many of the private jets that they service and house there. It was a great morning to catch up with him and his wife because I had not seen them since I was at Egbe in November of last year.

The owner of Banyan was a missionary kid in Egbe in the 60’s and his father was the original surgeon that helped start the hospital in 1952. He now blesses the Egbe Hospital and the people there with procuring materials and sending them in the shipping containers (and many more things). After the tour, we borrowed a car and drove 2 hours to Ft. Myers Beach and we are now visiting with my grandmother who has a condo here. We will come home on Sunday and until then we will relax and catch up on some much needed rest after such a long and eventful week. Thanks for all of your prayers!

Email Patrice@MilesInMissions.com if you would like to be added to our prayer partner list. We currently have 128 and we would like to have 400 before we leave. You can also click GIVE  if God has called you to become one of our financial partners.

Sunset Safari

Sunset Safari

We are so excited that Mollie Younger, owner of Pinot’s Palette has blessed us with our first fundraiser event. Wednesday April 17th at 6pm supporters will be instructed for 2 hours. Each person will receive a canvas, paint and brushes. At the end of the evening they will leave with a masterpiece, Safari Sunset. While painting our family will get to mingle and and pass out snacks. This should be a fun event and our family cannot wait to get to see everyone. Click on the following link to RSVP as we only have 60 spots. Pinot’s Pallete St Mathews. pinot's palette

Our departure date is less than 4 months away! Our home is SOLD and we move April 28th. In May we will be taking items down to our container in Ft Lauderdale that will ship to Nigeria. We will be shipping foods we cannot live without (coffee, peanut butter), household items, clothes, furniture and more. It will take almost 3 months for the container to reach Egbe. June we will spend the entire month in the hills of North Carolina for cross cultural training. In July we will be back in Louisville finalizing packing and saying good bye. August we are off and will not step fool on American soil for 21 months.

We are currently 40% funded and will not be able to leave in August unless we are 85% funded by the first of June. This event and many others will help us reach our goal. We cannot wait to get to Egbe to help the Nigerian people and the Egbe Hospital. There are so many ways you can support us and help the people of Egbe;

  1. Attending the Pinot’s Palette event
  2. Volunteer to make snacks for the Pinot’s Palette event
  3. Allow us to come and share our journey with your Bible Study group or office.
  4. Become a financial partner with us. DONATE HERE
  5. Become one of our 400 prayer partners. Email me to be added to our prayer partner list at Patrice@MilesInMissions.com
SIMGO 2013

SIMGo Spring 2013 team heading to different locations all over the world!

When you think of missionaries, what is the first thing you think of? I used to always think, “Someone who needs money.” Yes this is true as we cannot help people without the support of our financial partners, but this isn’t God’s sole purpose for this calling. He doesn’t just want physical needs met. He wants our spiritual needs met as well. So many wonderful people I come across say they are so sorry they cannot support us right now because of their financial situation. My response is always the same. “You can support us through prayer!” “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest” Luke 10:2.

As you can see in the picture above a few peoples faces are whited out. This is for their protections as they are heading to countries were they could face persecution or even death because of their faith. As we head to Nigeria in August we are heading into enemy territory. Satan does not want us there. We will need prayer for our marriage, our children, our health, days of travel to get to the site and our sanity. Once there we will need continued prayer for our ministry to the Nigerians, re-building of the hospital our family transitioning into home schooling and God’s leading with our involvement with the local HELP orphanage. Will you pray for us? We need 400 prayer partners that will receive a weekly email from us with prayer requests. Will you please consider being one of our prayer partners now and for the next 2 years. Please email me Patrice@MilesInMissions.com if you would like to become a prayer partner for our family.

Out HouseYes, our house is for sale and everything else along with it. Click the photo of our home to be directed to the actual listing. We have had out home on the market for about a month and have received 2 contracts. Unfortunately the first was too low and the second is a contingency contract that we are working out the details to now. We also have a 3rd party that should be making an offer next month. Our home that Lenny built for us  is right down the street from Southeast Christian Church and Christian Academy of Louisville. It sits on 2 beautiful wooded acres but yet so close to everything. It is bittersweet to sell her as we have scriptures written in the walls and a lot of memories. Lenny completed most of the custom projects with his own hands. He is at peace as I am that God has something so much nicer planned for us in Egbe.

20' Crownline Deck Boat

20′ Crownline Deck Boat

We will also be selling our boat and many other items in our home. Lenny’s pride and joy was his deck boat and he can tell you everything about it if you or someone you know is interested. For now it is a 20″ Crownline deck boat that can easily fit 10 people on while skiing and tubing. He is asking $8,000 for it.

Egbe Grocery Store

Egbe Grocery Store

Abby Anderson was nice enough to send us a picture of our new grocery store. As you can see we will have a large selection of items to choose from….HAHA. We will be living in the bush so I guess I should be happy that we have a grocery store at all. We have started thinking of items to ship over before we arrive since we will need some time to adjust to the Nigerian food. We tried to quit drinking coffee and after a week we were going to hurt someone our ourselves. Needless to say we will be shipping 100lbs of coffee along with many other essentials in May on a large shipping container. A few other items will be our couches, mattresses, clothing for two years, dishes, small appliances, and a motorcycle for transportation. These are just a few of the items we have been advised that we will not be able to live without. This is just the beginning of items we will need to purchase and pack. It is very overwhelming and since we have no mail courier service and the closest town with essentials is 3 hours away, we get worried that we may forget something!
